Havant Hornets (or Havant Junior Badminton Club) is a friendly and welcoming badminton club for young people aged between 8 and 16 years old.  We provide coaching and games at Havant Leisure Centre giving young players a chance to learn and improve their skills and to have fun at the same time.  We run two sessions of one hour each, between 4.00 and 5.00 pm and 5.00 – 6.00 pm on Mondays during normal school term times.

We have a wide diversity of playing abilities amongst our members, from beginners to far more experienced players.  We will encourage you if you wish to train harder and learn more skills but also if you wish to enjoy the game and just have fun!

Our coach, Peter Smith, is a well known and respected coach; he also coaches young Hampshire players.  We also have assistant coaches who are on hand to help.

About our coach Peter Smith

Peter has been coaching badminton at various levels since 1993 and qualified as a Badminton England Part one coach in 1995. His initial coaching experience began when he coached his son, Andrew, from the age of 8 until he was 14. During which time, he developed into one of the county’s top junior players, representing England on many occasions. Andrew has since moved on to become ranked as the UK’s number 1 singles player and 28 (currently) in the Worlds Rankings. Whilst coaching Andrew he was engaged to coach the Hampshire Junior Squad at U13 and U15 age groups. Following early retirement, he decided to concentrate on his coaching at all age groups and levels in order to attract as many people as possible to the game. His coaching responsibilities have recently included,

  • County Squad

  • 3 Junior Clubs

  • ‘MIND’ charity

  • Southampton Solent University

  • Southampton Schools Squad

  • Adult education groups

  • Badminton for the disabled sessions throughout Hampshire,

We were lucky to be awarded a grant from the National Lottery last year and this has helped our club to increase from one session to two, provide shirts for our members and pay for competition prizes.  It has also helped our volunteers gain accreditation for coaching and child protection.  All our adults have been Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checked.

In addition to helping young badminton players enjoy the game, we organise competitions inside the club between members and with other local clubs.  There are regular opportunities to enter competitions run by Hampshire Badminton at the Westgate Centre in Winchester and at some other leisure centres, for example, some of our members have played in competitions in Southampton and Portsmouth over the last year.  We also have members who are part of the Hampshire Development Squad and train either in Winchester or at Highbury College in Portsmouth.

Badminton is a great sport, it develops racquet skills, hand/eye coordination, teamwork (when playing doubles) and is a sport that you can continue to play and enjoy as an adult.

The club is run entirely by volunteers although we receive great support from Havant Borough Council.  If you have an interest in joining our club, initial enquiries can be made through this website on our contact page or via the Secretary, Maggie Phillips.   Please note: occasionally we operate a waiting list, depending on current numbers.
